Development strategy

  • Minas de Carvao

The content of ash in the coal existing in Brazil recommends that it be applied as near as possible to the mining site, which directs its consumption to the generation of electrical energy in thermoelectric power stations. This vocation, combined with the depletion – forecast for the coming years – of the competitive hydroelectric use, has led the industry to insert in its long-term planning the expansion of coal-based thermoelectric generation by increasing the current generating park from 1,050 MW to 7,150 MW by 2010.

COPELMI seeks to model its growth on this strategy, increasing, by means of research, our coal reserves and establishing partnerships for developing coal-based thermoelectric power stations in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil.
